Biography

Joseph Valentino, MD is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Kentucky.   He received his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He served his residency at the University of Minnesota and completed the Fellowship in Head & Neck cancer surgery and microvascular reconstruction at the University of Iowa.   He is certified with the American board of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery.   Since 2006, he’s been selected as one of the 100 Best Doctors in his specialty.  Dr. Valentino is well written in the medical literature and is a frequently invited lecturer to other medical groups.  He is the Medical Director of the Head, Neck and Respiratory Clinic (HNRC) at the Markey Cancer Center, where he provides leadership to both clinical care and research activities.  He is actively involved in many cancer research protocols and is Principal Investigator in several studies for cessation of smoking for cancer patients, his noted MOST study and continues this with his recent TOPS research protocol.  His service includes editorial boards of several otolaryngology publications, and numerous committees for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery as well as the Markey Cancer Center with the University of Kentucky. With a great passion and dedication for medical education he is heavily involved in the instruction and mentoring of residents, medical students, paraprofessional students and graduate students in the health sciences.  His various teaching awards illustrate his abilities to instruct and mentor.  Dr. Valentino continues to work tirelessly in education committees, the College of Medicine Faculty Council and Markey Cancer Research committees.  Dr. Valentino has and continues to be actively involved in scientific and academic pursuits directly related to the treatment of patients with neoplastic disorders of the head and neck. He has stated before that the suffering of his patients drives his scientific interest.
